Big Burns Supper invites Dumfries & Galloway schoolsto ignite creativity in 2026–27 carnival programme

As Big Burns Supper prepares to celebrate its 15th anniversary, the team is calling on
schools across Dumfries & Galloway to once again play a central role in the region’s biggest winter celebration. Having worked with thousands of young people over the past decade and a half, the festival is reigniting its commitment to creative learning and community collaboration – inviting primary and secondary schools to help shape the 2027 Carnival.
Organisers say bringing schools back into the heart of the programme is about more than
performance; it’s about rebuilding shared experiences, nurturing young talent, and ensuring the next generation feels ownership of a festival that belongs to the whole community.
From August 2026 to January 2027, art teachers and pupils across the region will have the
opportunity to work alongside professional artists on ambitious creative projects linked to
Dumfries Carnival – a flagship element of Big Burns Supper that brings thousands of people together each January in a powerful celebration of culture, creativity and regional pride.

Join a festival tradition with real impact
For over 15 years, Big Burns Supper has partnered with local schools to strengthen
community spirit and develop opportunities that:
● Build confidence and artistic skills through hands-on collaboration
● Enhance social engagement and attainment among pupils
● Provide professional artist support and materials at no cost to schools
● Boost community wellbeing and local pride
● Deliver professional photography of finished costumes for pupil portfolios
Opportunities of a design competition within their class, with the winning costume brought to life by the pupils themselves – supported by professional artists. It’s an exciting opportunity for young people to see their ideas realised on a larger stage.

Flexible and inclusive engagement
Big Burns Supper understands the demands of the school calendar – and offers flexible
collaboration to fit within school plans. Projects begin in August 2026 and can continue
through to early January 2027, ensuring schools have time to tailor participation around
classroom priorities.

How to get involved
Secondary art teachers interested in collaborating with artists should submit an expression
of interest by 4th March 2026.
Primary schools are encouraged to explore creative ways to participate and bring their ideas to life.
Let’s create something unforgettable – together.
