Creative Communications Assistant | Freelance, Part-time

Creative Compass Team | DG Unlimited

Are you a creative storyteller with a love of words, visuals and ideas? Do you enjoy bringing people, projects and communities to life through content?

DG Unlimited is seeking a Creative Communications Assistant to join our growing Creative Compass team on a freelance, part-time basis.

This is a brand-new role within our organisation and an exciting opportunity to shape how we communicate the work of DG Unlimited and the creative and cultural sector across Dumfries and Galloway and beyond.

Commission Fees

£115 per 8 hour day with the possibility of additional contracted hours. This is a Creative Scotland funded commission. Freelance commission: 4 hours per day to a total of 8 hours per week (part time), with flexibility as agreed. 3-month initial probationary period with potential for extension to a 12-month contract, 52 weeks in total.

Please note: This role is in not an Artist Commission, but a freelance part time role, and not a PAYE job. It does not require any formal qualifications and is designed for any creative person at any level who is looking for a part time creative role, to build their experience, or apply for a flexible, hybrid part time role to supplement their family’s income. This role commission exceeds the BECTU and UNISON Union rates for an entry level assistant and is over the UK Living Wage rate. This opportunity has been designed specifically to encourage individuals with an interest in the creative industries but who do not have formal creative or artistic qualification to consider applying.

About the role

Creative Compass is a major programme of activity for creative practitioners of all mediums, providing opportunities for creative professional development, leadership skills, and workshops all developed and designed to contribute positively to shaping the future of the creative and cultural sector in the South of Scotland.

As our Creative Communications Assistant, you will support the Creative Compass team by producing engaging, high-quality content across a range of formats and platforms.

This role is for someone who is first and foremost a creative storyteller:
a strong writer with a good visual eye, curiosity about culture and media, and a desire to develop skills in creative digital content, photography, video and design.

This is not a social media-only role. You will be contributing to content that appears across our website, digital publications, newsletters, social channels and partner communications – helping tell the stories of creative people, projects and places across the South of Scotland.

You will work both independently and collaboratively with a friendly, supportive and diverse team.

Who this role is for

This role is ideal for:

  • An emerging or early-career creative, school leaver or student studying at any level.
  • An established creative practitioner seeking an additional commission
  • Or an individual who would like to build their portfolio of experience, develop their skills and grow their creative network while working within a vibrant cultural organisation.

How to apply

Please send your cover letter and CV with two references, and links to your own creative practice or portfolio to comms.dgu@gmail.com. References will only be contacted if invited to the interview stage.

Applications deadline 5pm 27th February 2026

Interviews will be conducted in person in Dumfries and Galloway on 4th March 2026
