DG Unlimited Member Achieves ‘Working with Communities’ Qualification

We are delighted to share that DG Unlimited member Bea Last has successfully completed the Introduction to Working with Communities (PDA SCQF Level 6) through Dumfries and Galloway College.

Bea accessed the course through her membership with DG Unlimited, as part of our ongoing work with Community Learning and Development to open up professional development opportunities for our members.

About the course

The Working with Communities qualification is designed for those who want to build or refresh their skills in community-based practice. Delivered through distance learning, the course combines self-directed study with mentoring support, making it flexible and accessible for working practitioners.

Bea describes the course as:

“Working with Communities is the perfect course to either learn or update skills. For a more mature student, this course brought together my own lived experiences of working within communities along with current legislations and policies. The course is pretty much self-directional, full of information and resource materials along with one-to-one mentoring.

Personally I struggled with the design of the website. I found it somewhat overwhelming. This is probably due to me being a more mature, post-menopausal woman with a creative brain that does not follow the norm. However, my tutor Maggie was absolutely fantastic. She helped redirect the course work in a way that was more enabling and more inclusive to my needs. There are alternatives built into the course for those who perhaps have limited internet access or who work better through audio only.

The course brought together my 40 years of experience working with communities through the arts with a recognisable qualification that is current and perhaps more relevant than my previous qualifications of working within the community.”

We are so pleased to see Bea’s decades of experience formally recognised through this qualification. It is a fantastic example of how lived experience and professional practice can be strengthened through structured learning.

Professional development through DG Unlimited

This course is one of several distance learning opportunities available through Dumfries and Galloway College that DG Unlimited team members and Talent Pool members can access.
