Step Through the Looking Glass with “Writers in Wonderland” — A Celebration of Creativity and Imagination
Budding writers are being invited to create their own wonderlands this Tuesday evening (18th November, 2025), at a special tea party at Thomas Tosh in Thornhill.
Commingled Creative Director Heather Taylor is hosting the event, part of Book Week Scotland , inspired by the magic of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland.
Heather has been appointed as one of the Scottish Book Trust’s Emerging Programmers for Book Week, which runs from the 17th to 23rd November. She was selected for her commitment to creating welcoming spaces for storytelling and creativity.
Participants will be encouraged to let their imaginations roam freely, drawing inspiration from the curious and whimsical world of Lewis Carroll’s Wonderland with time for sharing their ideas at the end.
The special free workshop will be led by established local writer Carolyn Hashimoto. Carolyn has created a workbook that participants will use for the evening of exploration and creative discovery.
“I wanted to host a get together that captures the spirit of play and curiosity found in Wonderland — where everyone, regardless of experience, can explore their creativity,” Heather explains.
So, if you would like to spark you writing adventure for the first time, or are already experienced at writing either professionally or for leisure, please come,” Heather says.
Writers in Wonderland is also sponsored by Thomas Tosh, as part of their 2025 programme.

“It’s great to be the venue for the Scottish Book Trust, and Heather’s night. We’re making sure that Tosh is decked out with all things Alice so it looks the part. The café area is going to have a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party atmosphere. We’ve decorated the building with Alice memorabilia. And we will be displaying wonderful, specially commissioned stained-glass windows by Southerness-based artist Linda Hadfield.

“We will also have an exhibition of screenprints by John Patrick Reynolds of the original illustrations by John Tenniel, which played such a part in creating Alice’s world.”
The event will take place on Tuesday 18th November at 6.30pm at Thomas Tosh (19 East Morton Street, Thornhill, DG3 5LZ) beginning with complimentary refreshments before the evening’s creative adventure unfolds.
